Turmeric (Curcumin) for Horses

Turmeric has been used for many centuries as a holistic medicine in many parts of the world for humans. It is known to be one of the best natural antioxidants (An antioxidant is an element believed to guard body cells from the damaging effects of oxidation. It decreases inflammation by lowering histamine levels and possibly by increasing production of natural cortisone by the adrenal glands).

My mother would mix it with water and make us drink it. Not only can you drink it, but also create a paste for your hair, or even your face.

There have been many studies (on humans) that prove to be beneficial internally for joints, muscles, overall health and possibly cancer. As well as externally for wounds, eczema, scabs, itching etc.

My horse has kissing spine, tense muscles, spurs growing in his hocks, constant upset stomach and beginning of arthritis (he’s 14 and was a show jumper all his life). I had him on so many supplements when i first got him but they only upset his stomach more and i never noticed much of a difference with his movement. Once i was introduced to turmeric for horses, we were both hooked! I felt a tremendous difference in his gate and spirit. He moves much more freely now even at a walk and he gets excited to when you tack him up or take him out on hacks. He doesn’t groan anymore when he needs to poop.

  • Turmeric: 1 tablespoon
  • Freshly ground pepper (to activate it): 6-8 twists
  • Coconut Oil/flaxseed oil/olive oil (to neutralize it): 2 table spoons *I personally use coconut oil as it is better for digestion.
  • Cooking batter(flour): 12 teaspoons

Option: you can apply sweeteners such as date syrup or crushed mints, my horse doesn’t get any sweeteners as I try to avoid giving him sugary ingredients.

Bake at 180 degrees C for about 20-25 minutes

End result:

Start by only giving them one cookie a day, then build it up to two or three if necessary. My horse only has two, and only when he’s in work. If he’s out of work he gets one for maintenance, and somedays none. The treats do stain yellow but can be washed with water.

Note: If you wish to simply add straight to your horses feed, you may very well do so by mixing the above ingredients but without the cooking batter.

Like everything else, if used at high doses, it could cause an adverse effect; therefore, it is important to measure your doses. Keep in mind as well that due to the fact that it thins the blood; it is suggested to stop any turmeric intake at least 7-10 days before an operation.

Happy baking :)!
