GIVEAWAY! ft. EcoLicious Equestrian

A while back I reviewed a de-tangler for the mane and tail from Ecolicous Equestrian, called De-stress which I absolutely love! They were kind enough to send me a free full size bottle for a giveaway for you guys 😍 ; SO I decide to do an end of year Giveaway 🙂

It promotes overall scalp health and, along with Rosemary Extract, aids in growth of healthy manes and tails. The cocktail of Certified Organic Hemp Oil, Coconut, Apricot, Wheat Germ and Olive Oil – full of antioxidants and essential fatty acids -“feeds” the moisture starved scalp and tresses. Tea Tree Essential Oil is known to prevent dandruff and Sunflower Extract protects against UV damage. You’ve gotta see the stunning results for yourself!

Importance of Sheath Cleaning for Your Horse

For those of you who don’t know, a horses sheath is the pocket of skin that protects your horses private part. The reason why their sheaths need to be cleaned is due to the fact that a substance called smegma tends to build up in that area.

Smegma consists of dirt and dead skin cells. Some horses may also develop something called a “bean” which is also smegma but in a hard ball like texture. The bean can either be inside the sheath or near the urethra which can eventually cause interference with urine flow.

Geldings tend to need sheath cleaning more often that stallions as they extrude much less. Therefore, the smegma builds up faster in the skin folds.

Stallions would only need cleaning once a year. Whereas geldings would most likely need cleaning once or twice a year, depending on your horse and how often they relax.

For cleaning the sheath you will need:

  • Trimmed fingernails! Yes your nails should be trimmed in order to avoid any sharpness or cuts
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Bucket with warm water
  • Cotton/soft sponge
  • Sheath cleaning product (I use Smeg-U-Later by Ecolicious)

IMG_1719

Always remember, SAFETY FIRST! Make sure your horse is comfortable enough to let you clean him, otherwise, sedation could be an option.

Make sure you stand facing your horse’s back legs but not too close to be in the kick range zone. Approach your horse gently and calmly then start the following, as suggested by InfoVets:

1. Fill the bucket with warm (not hot) water.

2. Place a rubber glove on the right hand and then place a cotton sock over the right hand (a small rag or pieces of cotton can be used in place of the sock).

3. Soak the sock, rag, or cotton in the bucket of warm, soapy water. The soap not only cleans, but acts as a lubricant.

4. Begin by approaching the horse from the left side. With the left hand on the side or back of the horse, move towards the horse’s sheath with the right hand. MOVE SLOWLY and GENTLY, rubbing the horse as progress is made towards the sheath. Many horses will kick and resist this at first. Because a horse can easily reach its abdomen (belly) with a foot, it is important to keep your head high and watch out for your right hand.

5. Soak the opening of the sheath with the hose and plenty of warm water.

6. Anytime during this procedure it may be necessary to remove debris (smegma) that is encountered.

7. A thorough cleaning of all folds and surfaces of the sheath can now take place.

8. Remove the “bean” or smegma that is commonly found on the sides of the urethral opening in the urethral diverticulum

9. Once all the debris is removed, thoroughly rinse the sheath with warm, non-soapy water. Any remaining soap can cause irritation.

Ecolicious “Leave Me Be” Body Spray REVIEW

Today I will be reviewing the Ecolicious LEAVE ME BE all natural Equine Body Spray. As you may recall, if you follow me, i did a haul on Ecolicious Equestrian Products. Click here to check out the haul.

photo 4-5

I got the LEAVE ME BE spray as an alternative to my Ultashield fly spray as ecolicious is made of all natural ingredients and is also eco friendly, whereas the ultrasheild, even though works great, is full of chemicals, and not to mention that it comes with false packaging as the fly spray does not last 17 days, let alone one.

So I have been using LEAVE ME BE for a bit more than a month now and both Tofino and I are lov-ing it! As Ecolicious quotes:

You don’t want to spray your horse with chemical-laden products and we couldn’t agree more. Leave Me Be is the perfect spray to keep your horse comfortable and happy this summer without the use of harsh, irritating chemicals that can be hard on his sensitive skin. We’ve formulated our Body Spray using fine wild-crafted essential oils and plant extracts that are gentle on the environment. Tea Tree Oil is known to protect and sooth irritated and bug-bitten skin, while the blend of cooling Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Citronella and Lemon will keep your horse feeling and smelling fresh. We’ve also added ultra-moisturizing Vegetable Glycerin, known for its skin and coat conditioning properties, for that ooh-soo-silky feeling.

And no, we did not forget UV protection  – we don’t like bleached coats either. Leave Me Be contains Sunflower Seed Extract, a natural sunscreen, to help protect your horse’s coat from damaging UV rays. Like all EcoLicious products, this spray is made with human-grade ingredients, because we believe in only the best for  your equine partner.

This is the perfect combination for Tofino as he is grey, therefore, gets sun protection, shine, soothing effect and of course leaves the flies and bugs away.

We tend to go on hacks a lot, and there are specific times when passing through the municipality garbage area where we get attached by a swarm of flies and other bugs. However, using this fly spray before i hack has prevented us being followed by bugs and insects!

The only complaint i have about this product is the packaging. The sprayer is so stiff and slippery. It also sprays a lot and very wide. I switched the spray bottle to an ACE Hardware Sprayer Bottle instead (32oz) as seen below:

Pros:

  • Repels bugs/insects
  • Smells amazing
  • UV protection
  • Adds shine
  • Natural ingredients
  • Conditioning
  • Soothing
  • Cooling

Cons:

  • Sprayer is stiff and hard to press
  • Sprayer sprays a lot

I cannot rave more about this product honestly, it smells amazing, does its job well and has UV protection. What more could you ask for? Definitely purchasing a refill.

Bathing Bucket TOUR!

Bathing a horse is necessary to not only keep them clean, but to prevent some skin conditions too, especially in the summer months. So i decided to do a tour for you guys to view what i have inside my bathing bucket for Tofino.

Note that it is not necessary to bathe your horse everyday or even every week, but when necessary.

My bathing bucket consists of the following:

1. Ace Hardware Bucket
2. Sweat Scraper
3. Ecolicious Squeaky Green Shampoo
4. Ecolicious Silky Conditioner
5. Currycomb hand mitt (after applying shampoo)
6. Brush Sponge (which i use to apply shampoo)
7. Sponge

Ecolicious De-Stress Treatment REVIEW

As promised in my Ecolicious Equestrian haul, i will be doing a review on each of the products i purchased, starting with the DE-STRESS Intensive Restructuring & Detangling Treatment

So i managed to try this treatment out on Tofino’s very tangled tail and it was strange to spread the oil with my hands rather than using a spray as i am used to the ShowSheen Hair Polish & Detangler spray. I decided to switch to ecolicious after reading the ingredients, which are all natural unlike the showsheen spray. The De-Stress consists of the following: Certified Organic Hemp Oil, Coconut Oil, Apricot, Wheat Germ, Tea Tree, Sunflower Extract and Olive Oil

Now the showsheen does its job very well, however, one cannot compare natural products with chemical products, especially when used on live species whether it’s on our horses, our pets or ourselves (yes ecolicious products can be used on humans too. yay!).

When applying, you first shake the bottle (as natural ingredients clump up), then pour  little in the palm of your hands, rub your hands together and apply on horses tail/mane. I did need to do this around 3 times to cover the full tail. Once you apply it all over your horses tail, hold the tail and start brushing using a tail brush from the bottom and continue upwards.

I realized that Tofino’s tangles straightened rather quickly without much effort which i was happy about.

Once i brushed his mane and tail, they both became super soft and shiny! Here are some pictures below after the treatment (click to enlarge):

photo 3-8 photo 1-9photo 1-8

Pros:

  • Natural
  • Smells great
  • Easy use
  • Quick fix
  • Don’t need much of product for it to work
  • Shiny mane & tail (lasts approx. 4 days)
  • Less frizzy (yes, his mane gets frizzy due to high levels of humidity here)

Cons:

  • Not spray
  • Need to use hands (therefore, need to wash them after treatment)
  • Detangling doesn’t last more than a day for the tail only (but still shines)

Would i purchase again? YES
I really like what ecolicious equestrian products stand for and how eco friendly they are 🙂
